Optofluidics: Combining Light and Microfluidics

Optofluidics merges optics with microfluidics — using light to sense what is in a channel, and using fluids to shape light itself. It powers much of the detection in lab-on-a-chip devices. Here is an introduction.

What is optofluidics?

Optofluidics is the integration of photonic and microfluidic elements on one chip. It covers two directions: using light to probe fluids (sensing, imaging, spectroscopy) and using fluids to control light (tunable lenses, liquid waveguides, dye lasers).

Optics that sense the fluid

  • Integrated waveguides deliver light to and from the channel.
  • On-chip detection — fluorescence, absorbance and scattering read the sample, as in electrophoresis and droplet systems.
  • Optical trapping — focused light (optical tweezers) holds and moves single cells.

Fluids that shape light

Because liquids can have precisely tuned refractive indices, they make reconfigurable optics — liquid-core waveguides, tunable microlenses and even liquid dye lasers — that a solid device cannot.

Why it matters

Integrating optics on-chip shrinks the instrument around a lab-on-a-chip, improving portability and sensitivity for diagnostics and research. Material clarity and surface quality are critical — see our materials guide.

Frequently asked questions

What is optofluidics?

The integration of optics and microfluidics on a single chip — using light to probe fluids (sensing, imaging) and using fluids to control light (tunable lenses, waveguides).

What is optofluidics used for?

On-chip optical detection (fluorescence, absorbance), optical trapping of cells, and reconfigurable optical components such as tunable lenses and liquid waveguides.

Why does material clarity matter in optofluidics?

Because light passes through the chip, low-autofluorescence, optically clear materials like COC, COP or glass are needed for sensitive detection.
